What is a breast lift?

A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure which reshapes and restores the position of the breast. Following a breast lift with Dr. Stark your breasts will appear to have more fullness with improved contour and a more youthful appearance.

What are the benefits of a breast lift?

A breast lift can improve quality of life by:

  • Providing a more youthful appearance by making breasts look more perky.
  • Improving self-confidence.
  • Enhancing the fit of clothing.
  • Giving the breasts a more shapely appearance.
  • Reducing back and neck pain caused by breast ptosis (sagging).
  • Improving breast augmentation or reduction surgery results by creating a more pleasing breast shape and position.

Am I a candidate
for a breast lift?

Patients who are seeking a breast lift typically fall into one or more of the following categories:

  • They have completed their family and no longer need to worry about future pregnancy affecting their breast shape.
  • They have undergone massive weight loss, which has led to significant ptosis (sagging).
  • They have noticed that their breasts have changed over time due to the natural aging process and gravity.
  • Their breasts are asymmetrical or have lost volume due to previous pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss.

How is a breast lift performed?

Dr. Stark performs a breast lift using three types of incisions. During your consultation, you and he will decide which incision is best based upon your anatomy and cosmetic goals. Because of the manipulation to the breast involved in this type of surgery, incisions are more extensive than those needed in a breast augmentation surgery. As always, Dr. Stark uses meticulous closure techniques as well as strict scar regimen routine post-operatively to help minimize the appearance of scars.

  • A periareolar incision is made around the areola
  • A keyhole incision is made around the areola and then vertically to the bottom of the breast
  • An anchor incision is made around the areola, vertically to the bottom of the breast, and horizontally along the breast crease

Through these incisions, Dr. Stark is able to improve volume loss and ptosis or sagging. Although Dr. Stark keeps your incisions as small as possible some of his Philadelphia patients are able to return to work in several days, most women take a week off before they resume normal activities. It is important to refrain from any straining to the chest wall for two weeks after the operation but activity level can be increased gradually. After two to four months when swelling has completely subsided, you will be able to fully appreciate the final results of your breast lift procedure.

As always, careful review of your expectations and proper aftercare with Dr. Stark is necessary to ensure your satisfaction with your procedure.

Considerations for your breast lift:

During your consultation with Dr. Stark your goals will be reviewed. If you desire more superior pole fullness in addition to repositioning and reshaping, an augmentation may be combined with your breast lift surgery. This can be achieved with implants or fat-grafting for a more natural, fuller look.

Breast Lift
with Implants

If you are looking to improve both the shape and size of your breasts, you may be a candidate for a breast lift with implants. This procedure can provide you with larger, more youthful-looking breasts. However, it is important to note that a breast lift alone will not significantly change the size of your breasts, which is why many patients prefer the combination.

Breast Lift with Fat Grafting

If you are looking to improve both the shape and size of your breasts, you may be a candidate for a breast lift with fat grafting. This procedure can provide you with larger, more youthful-looking breasts by using your own purified adipose tissue (fat) harvested from other areas of your body.

If you are considering a breast lift with fat grafting, it is important to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and expectations. During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your unique anatomy to determine if this is the right procedure for you.

Recovery and Aftercare

Most patients report minimal discomfort and swelling after their breast lift surgery. Recovery time is typically short, with most patients resuming all normal activities within two weeks. After your surgery, you will need to take it easy for a few days. You will likely experience some swelling and bruising, which is normal. To help with the swelling, you should sleep with your head elevated and ice your breasts for the first few days. You will also need to wear a surgical bra 24/7 for the first four weeks.

You should avoid strenuous activity and lifting anything heavy for at least six weeks. You will also need to avoid sitting directly on your buttocks for two weeks to prevent putting pressure on your incisions. It is important to clean your incisions regularly and keep them dry. You should also avoid soaking in a tub or swimming for at least two weeks. Your surgeon will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your incisions. Following your surgeon's advice is critical, so the healing process goes as smoothly as possible.
