What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure that breaks up and removes fat from targeted areas of the body. These fat cells are lastingly removed, changing and refining the shape of the body for a leaner, more streamlined look in your chosen areas. Liposuction is not designed for weight loss — that should be accomplished through diet and exercise, or specialized weight loss surgical procedures.

However, for many people, no matter how rigorously they exercise or how carefully they count calories, carb grams, or fat grams, it can only do so much to overcome genetic code. People are predisposed to accumulate fat in certain areas, and unfortunately, in many cases those areas are not where we want the fat to go.

What are the benefits of Liposuction?

Liposuction is one of the most popular kinds of cosmetic surgery because it has proven effective and comes with a host of significant benefits. Some of these include the following:

  • Permanently removes fat cells from a target area.
  • Removes fat cells that have resisted diet and exercise.
  • Enhances your appearance and how others may look at you.
  • Safely and effectively removes fat.
  • Increase motivation to stay healthy and maintain your new contours.
  • Boosts self-confidence.

While all of the above focuses on cosmetic reasons for lipo, this fat removal surgery can also treat some specific conditions:

  • Gynecomastia. This condition occurs because of hormonal imbalances in males, causing breast tissue growth and fat to accumulate. Liposuction can help by removing excess fat and restoring a more masculine appearance to the chest.
  • Lymphedema. When lymphatic fluid starts getting into surrounding tissue, it may cause inflammation and increase the growth of fat stem cells. Liposuction can be effectively used to remove this excess fat.
  • Body fat distribution. Fat cells often focus on one area of the body while ignoring other areas. Lipo can help create contours that look more evenly distributed across your body.
  • Lipomas. The fatty tumors are usually benign, but lipo can remove them.

Am I a good candidate for Liposuction?

Not everyone should undergo lipo. The best candidates have the following characteristics:

  • They are within 30% of their ideal body weight.
  • They have realistic goals for contouring their body.
  • Diets and exercise have been unable to get rid of the fat.
  • They don't smoke.

More than anything, the best candidates have common aesthetic concerns that can be resolved from lipo. Remember, liposuction surgery does not solve weight problems or the appearance of cellulite. However, both can be positively affected by this procedure.

What areas can be addressed with liposuction?

Our liposuction treatment can be effective for many areas of the body, including the:

  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Flanks
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Arms
  • Neck

Full liposuction results are revealed over the course of several months, but Dr. Stark makes every effort to provide his patients with minimal recovery times and maximum results.

What does liposuction accomplish?

Liposuction is best able to remove stubborn pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. Liposuction is not a long-term weight loss solution, but it is a highly effective way to shape and contour the body. At your in-person liposuction consultation, Dr. Stark will create the safest and best surgical plan for your specific objectives.

Liposuction
Techniques

Dr. Stark's commitment to offering the widest variety of the latest and most innovative procedures helps ensure that the best solution for you is well within reach. Some liposuction methods available at the StarkMD Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Center include:

S.A.F.E liposuction

S.A.F.E. stands for Separation, Aspiration and Fat Equalization. This advanced liposuction technique consistently affords smooth, natural-looking results. S.A.F.E. Lipo removes excess fat while also priming the body for optimal results by preparing a smooth, even layer of the remaining fat cells. This surgical body contouring procedure dramatically slims and shapes most areas of the body, including the abdomen, back, flanks, arms, thighs, and chin. For appropriate patients, S.A.F.E. liposuction can deliver superior results with minimal downtime.

VASER liposuction

VASER Liposuction involves highly specialized ultrasound technology that breaks down fat cells using ultrasonic sound waves. VASER liposuction is an effective option for removing stubborn fat deposits in a more gentle procedure that traditional liposuction, so there is no damage to blood vessels and nerves and less pain, swelling and downtime. This is an excellent technique to use in revision liposuction or high-definition liposuction.

High-Def liposuction

The "High-Definition" or "High-Def" method of liposuction specifically and artfully reveals muscle tone and definition in specified areas. High-Def liposuction sculpts and shapes the body to highlight musculature and minimize fat. If you've been working hard for ab or arm definition, but small, stubborn deposits of fat are masking your results, Dr. Stark's expertise can help with this unique procedure.

Some combination of these and other types of liposuction and body contouring can solve a diverse collection of issues and complaints with the overall shape of the body or specific body parts.

Types of Liposuction

Because no two patients have the same body and fat deposits, multiple types of liposuction are available to address any situation. These include:

Wet Liposuction. This specific procedure involves the injection of a solution into the area you're having treated, which allows you to avoid going under general anesthesia. This is because the injected solution tightens the capillaries of the target area and reduces bleeding. The solution is taken right back out as the fat gets extracted from the target area.

Super Wet Liposuction. This particular technique also injects liquid into the target area, but it's equal to the same amount of fat getting suctioned out. While this is one of the faster techniques, it does require either general anesthesia or sedation. Again, the solution comes back out with the extracted fat cells.

Tumescent Liposuction. This is the most commonly-performed kind of liposuction technique. Like the Super Wet procedure, the Tumescent version also injects a medicated solution into your target areas, but the type and amount of solution varies. You might have up to three times as much fluid injected as the amount of fat getting taken out. The solution itself mixes lidocaine, epinephrine, and saline. This solution numbs the area, reduces blood loss and swelling, and allows fat cells to be more easily extracted (at which time the solution also comes out). Tumescent lipo may take longer than other techniques.

Combining Liposuction With Other Procedures

One of the best aspects of getting lipo is that you can combine it with various other procedures to maximize your results. Some of these include the following:

Mommy Makeovers

This is actually a general term for several procedures that are combined into a single session, usually after pregnancy when there have been changes to your body. Mommy Makeovers can also include tummy tucks, breast augmentation, and butt lifts.

Abdominoplasty

This surgery, also known as a tummy tuck, is commonly combined with liposuction. Lipo extracts fat from the abdomen, while the tummy tuck removes excess skin and repairs the abdominal muscles. Together they produce an overall slimmer and tighter abdomen. There is no "Liposuction vs. Tummy Tuck," as they don't serve the same purpose. Lipo complements a tummy tuck's results by removing fat from the area.

Fat transfer breast augmentations

One way liposuction is used is by extracting the fat from a specific area and then injecting it into your breasts to enlarge them. Fat transfer breast augmentation simultaneously slims one area while enhancing your bust.

Butt lifts

Similarly, you can use lipo to extract fat from one area of the body and inject it into your buttocks to reshape them. It's a similar concept to fat transfer breast augmentation. You slim one area of the body while enhancing another; in this case, your buttocks.

What's the difference between liposuction and weight loss surgery?

Perhaps the biggest difference between liposuction and weight loss surgery is that liposuction is a cosmetic procedure. It removes existing fat cells but does not address keeping them from returning. In essence, lipo changes the shape of your body's contours by suctioning out the fat.

Weight loss surgery, on the other hand, is designed to limit your food intake by reducing the size of your stomach. It requires a lifestyle change for the surgery to be approved, and there are several steps involved as a result.

How much does liposuction cost in Philadelphia?

Liposuction cost depends on a variety of factors. These factors include the specific treatment area, the amount of fat cells getting suctioned out, and if other procedures are happening during your visit. In addition, it is possible to have some of the cost covered by insurance if it's determined to be medically necessary. This can affect how much you end up paying.

Generally speaking, the price averages to between $2000-$4000 per area, but to get an exact estimate, you should schedule a consultation.

Liposuction FAQs

Does liposuction hurt?

Liposuction can be performed under anesthesia or sedation, which means you will not feel pain during the procedure. You may, however, feel pain or discomfort after, and it could depend on what area of the body Dr. Stark targeted. Dr. Stark and his team pride themselves on making the procedure the most comfortable it can be and will continue to work with you throughout your recovery. Discomfort, pain, swelling, bruising, and soreness are expected following the procedure but can be alleviated with medication.

Is liposuction a solution for obesity?

It's a common misconception, but, no, liposuction is not a recommended treatment for obesity or weight loss. Liposuction is most beneficial in removing stubborn fat areas. The procedure will likely remove several pounds while giving you your desired look, but it should not be substituted for healthy weight loss and an exercise regimen. An appointment with Dr. Stark can help you best assess a plan that makes sense for you and your body goals.

How do I prepare for liposuction?

Dr. Stark will work with you every step of the way to properly plan for your liposuction procedure. The StarkMD team will provide instructions leading up to surgery day and ensure your comfort and safety throughout. Preparations include making sure you have a comfortable recovery.

Can the fat eliminated by liposuction come back?

Excellent question. The fat cells removed by Dr. Stark through liposuction are permanently gone from your body. But this is where you come in. Because we know fat can be stubborn and cause problem areas, it is highly recommended that you do your part after recovery to make sure new fat cells do not emerge in the former problem area. This includes maintaining a healthy lifestyle that includes diet and exercise to ensure the best possible and longest-lasting results.

When can I return to work?

This can depend on the amount of liposuction performed. If it is a small area, some people return to work after a few days. However, if it is more extensive liposuction, it can take up to a week to return to work. Many patients quickly return to their daily routine, although they should hold off on strenuous exercises for weeks. If you don't feel any discomfort and your job doesn't require heavy lifting, there is no reason you cannot return to work in a short amount of time. But, again, your health and safety are the priority. Ultimately, it will be up to you and Dr. Stark to develop a plan that makes you comfortable and makes the most sense for you.

Will I have scars after liposuction?

Because this procedure involves incisions, you will likely have some scarring - but your liposuction scars will be small. The scars are small because the incisions themselves are pretty small and usually placed to minimize their appearance as much as possible.

Are liposuction results permanent?

The fat cells removed from liposuction are completely gone from your body. However, if you gain weight, new fat cells can replace or move into different parts of your body.

How much fat can liposuction remove?

How much fat can be removed can vary somewhat with your body type, but on average, it is safe to remove 3-4 liters (6-8 pounds) of fat from the body. Any more than that can cause complications.

Can liposuction get rid of belly fat?

Absolutely. Lipo is one of the most effective ways to do so and offers a dramatic way to slim your tummy area.

Is liposuction safe?

Because it is a surgery, it carries the same risks that occur any time an incision is made in your body. The risks include infections, bleeding, or reactions to the anesthesia. That being said, because the surgery focuses on the fatty layer under your skin, the risk remains low because the incisions are relatively shallow and less invasive than other surgeries.

However, liposuction is generally considered a safe, long-lasting, and low-risk procedure.
