Breast Implant Removal / Replacement

There are many reasons a woman may wish to have her breast implants removed. Sometimes, this is for health reasons, and other times women simply wish to go back to their natural look. Breast implant removal is also fairly common, whether to increase size, improve feel, or to replace them with higher quality implants.

How is breast implant removal or replacement performed?

Our Philadelphia breast implant removal and breast implant replacement are both performed under general anesthesia and should last about an hour. If you are also having a breast lift or other additional procedures, the surgery may be longer. In most cases, Dr. Stark will be able to use your original incision sites for surgery, thus minimizing additional scarring.

Reasons for breast implant replacement or removal:

In some rare cases, hard, painful scar tissue may develop in the breasts after breast augmentation or reconstruction. This is called capsular contracture and may necessitate the removal of the implants and scar tissue to restore the patient’s comfort.

When implants are leaking or in danger of leaking, patients should have their implants removed as soon as possible. Should the patient desire a breast revision, their breast implants can be replaced during the same procedure as well.

There have been many recent innovations in the feel and shape of breast implants. Dr. Stark frequently performs breast implant replacement surgery in order to allow women to further improve their enhanced breasts.

Breast implants can also be safely removed if a patient wishes to go back to their natural breast look and size. However, the breast skin may have stretched to accommodate the size of the implant and a breast lift or fat transfer breast augmentation may also be necessary for best results.

What happens
next?

The next steps depend largely upon your specific needs. Dr. Stark will either remove or remove and replace your implants through incisions under the breast fold, armpit, or around the areola. In cases where the capsules around the implants require removal, Dr. Stark will perform an en bloc capsulectomy. During an en bloc capsulectomy:

  • Both the implant and capsule will be removed from the breast pocket at the same time.
  • At a time or when necessary, a drain will be placed to protect against fluid buildup and accumulation in the breast pocket.

When the removal or replacement is complete, Dr. Stark will close the incisions with absorbable sutures.

Breast implant removal or replacement recovery

After successful completion of your surgery, you can expect to experience some pain and swelling for about two weeks. Pain medication will be prescribed as necessary by Dr. Stark for the first few days. If a drain was placed during the surgery, it may be removed by Dr. Stark once the output has slowed to an acceptably low level. This usually occurs within three to seven days.

Rigorous activity and lifting anything over 10 pounds must be avoided for at least two weeks. Dr. Stark will clearly communicate your aftercare instructions, but it is also important to pay attention to the signals of your own body as you recover.
