Lip augmentation uses many different techniques to deliver plumper lips. As we age and collagen production fades, the lips can lose their full, youthful quality. Lip augmentation adds subtle volume to the lips, creating a softer, younger look. The procedure can be performed with fillers, fat injections, or custom silicone lip implants.

What are the different types of lip augmentation?

Three methods are available for a custom lip augmentation:

  • Dermal filler injections (most common)
  • Natural fat transfer
  • Lip Implants

Lip augmentation with dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are among the most popular treatments for lip augmentation. The benefits of dermal fillers include:

  • The enhancement of the lips are immediate
  • The results are soft and natural
  • They are non-invasive and require no downtime
  • The treatment takes only thirty minutes or less

The most common fillers used for lip enhancement are hyaluronic acid-based fillers from the Juvéderm and Restylane lines.

Lip augmentation with fat injections

Natural fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, can produce a long-lasting increase in lip volume. The injection uses your own fat, harvested from another part of your body, which is then purified and injected into the lips. This procedure requires gentle liposuction to harvest healthy fat cells for transfer. The benefits of fat injections include:

  • The full lip created by this procedure looks and feels natural
  • The results last years
  • Once you achieve the lip you want, no added treatment is needed
  • This procedure does not require any incisions on the face or lips

Lip augmentation with lip implants

A lip implant is a long-term solution for plumper and fuller lips that requires no maintenance. The implants are inserted through tiny incisions at the corners of the mouth. The benefits of lip implants include:

  • The use of soft silicone or a biodegradable substance achieves a more dramatic lip volume
  • The surgery itself is short, around thirty minutes, with only a couple days of downtime
  • Scarring is minimal
  • The results last a lifetime

Am I a candidate for lip augmentation?

If you want fuller and plumper lips, one of these treatments is right for you. With the growing popularity of dermal fillers, you can banish thin and lined lips over a lunch break with no downtime.

What is the recovery time for lip augmentation?

Recovery time for lip augmentation varies based upon the treatment you choose. With dermal fillers, there is no downtime, although mild swelling or bruising could last a few days. If you choose a long-lasting enhancement for your lips, the downtime is in the range of one to three days.

How do I prepare for lip augmentation?

During your consultation, Dr. Stark will speak with you about your options. Your preparation will depend on the treatment you choose. With dermal fillers, there is no preparation and you can achieve plumper lips immediately. With fat injections and lip implants, it will require planning prior to the date of your procedure. Our office will ensure you have all instructions necessary to produce the best possible result.
