Our Philadelphia lip lift is often done to enhance lips that have lengthened or lost volume as part of the aging process. It can change the shape of the lip in a way fillers can’t, leaving the patient with a subtle, more youthful and pleasing shape.

What is a lip lift?

The lip lift procedure reduces the distance between the nose and upper lip, thereby lifting the lip, revealing more pink and showing off the teeth. This gives a fuller and more youthful appearance to the lips. Patients may choose to undergo a lip lift in addition to a facelift surgery, but it can also be an effective standalone procedure.

Benefits
of a Lip Lift

A lip lift offers more than just a change in lip shape—it can subtly shift the balance of the entire lower face. For many people, the space between the upper lip and the nose becomes longer with age, making the mouth appear thinner, heavier, or less expressive. A lip lift shortens this space and turns the upper lip slightly upward, revealing more of the pink lip and enhancing natural facial harmony. Common benefits include:

  • A more youthful, defined upper lip
  • Better tooth show when smiling
  • Permanently lifted lip without ongoing filler maintenance
  • Improved balance between the nose, lips, and chin
  • A refined, natural lip shape that moves normally with expressions
  • A more open, rested appearance around the mouth

It’s especially helpful for patients who want visible lip enhancement without added volume or who feel lip fillers haven’t created the right shape for them.

How is a lip lift performed?

A lip lift is a relatively minor procedure performed under local anesthesia. Your lip lift should be completed within an hour. During a lip lift, Dr. Stark makes an incision above the top lip to remove a strip of skin between the nose and upper lip. He shortens the distance between the top of the lips and the nose, by lifting the vermilion border, or upper lip’s edge. Dr. Stark artfully sculpts the cupid’s bow, or top point of your upper lip, to create greater fullness and improved projection of the upper lip.

Recovering from your lip lift

The look of your lips will be improved after your surgery, but full results may not be visible until all swelling and scarring has resolved—usually between three and six months later. You may experience bruising, swelling, and numbness after your surgery, but these symptoms should all recede within about three weeks.

Dr. Stark will prescribe pain medication as necessary after surgery, and ensure you know how to clean and care for your healing incision. Most patients can return to their normal routine just a few days after surgery. You should sleep with your head elevated for the first two days after surgery. It is also important to avoid particularly vigorous activities for several weeks.

Lip Lift FAQs

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the space between the nose and upper lip, giving a more defined and lifted appearance. Lip fillers add volume but don’t change the actual shape or position of the upper lip. A lift is permanent; filler is temporary.

It depends on your anatomy and goals. While many patients seek a lip lift for age-related changes, younger patients who have a naturally long upper lip or want more tooth show when they smile may also be good candidates.

The incision is hidden in the natural crease under the nose. With proper care, the scar typically heals very well and becomes barely noticeable over time.

Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and social activities after 7–10 days. Swelling and tightness can last a few weeks, but it’s generally a smooth healing process.

Not really. It’s done under local anesthesia, and most people compare recovery discomfort to mild soreness or tightness. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough.

No. When done correctly, a lip lift enhances the natural balance of your face without affecting your ability to speak, eat, or express emotions.

At StarkMD, lip lift pricing generally ranges from $3,500 to $5,500. You'll receive a personalized quote during your consultation, and financing options are available.

Yes. It’s often combined with a facelift, eyelid surgery, or laser skin treatments to improve facial balance and overall rejuvenation.

Results are permanent. Unlike injectables that fade over time, a lip lift creates a lasting change in the shape and proportion of your upper lip.

If you’re bothered by a long upper lip, lack of visible teeth when smiling, or you’ve tried fillers and didn’t like the result, a lip lift could be a better option.
