What are dermal fillers?

At StarkMD Plastic Surgery & Aesthetic Center, our Philadelphia Dermal fillers are substances designed and FDA approved to be injected under the skin to provide shape, volume, and contour in targeted treatment areas.

Different dermal fillers last for different amounts of time, often from six months to up to two years. Should you be willing and able to keep up with regular appointments to maintain your impressive results, dermal fillers may be a quicker, more affordable, and less invasive alternative to surgery for many patients. Dermal fillers can also assist in maintaining the results of past procedures, forestalling the need for further surgery

Aging and sun damage can result in a sagging, wrinkled, and tired-looking face. In addition, the aging process, pregnancy, and simple genetics can rob areas of your face of their former volume. With dermal fillers, a more youthful, voluminous, and contoured face may now be easier to attain than ever before.

Dermal fillers are essentially a liquid implant. Once injected into the skin, fillers add volume to thin, hollow, or poorly defined areas such as the lips, under eyes, cheeks, chin, temples, hands, or deep wrinkles around the mouth. You can have dermal fillers placed in one or more areas to accentuate your facial features, reverse the visible effects of aging, and provide a smooth, even skin relief that looks more like it did in your youth.

What do Dermal Fillers do?

Fillers involve placing a soft, gel-like substance into the skin to make the skin appear plumper and firmer. The ingredients in dermal fillers vary, but the underlying purpose is the same. The goal is to make you look more attractive, chiseled, and youthful!

Dermal Fillers vs. Botox

Unlike neuromodulators such as Botox, which softens wrinkles by immobilizing the underlying muscle, dermal fillers directly add volume and contour to the face or hands. In simplest terms, the dermal filler literally fills in the lines or wrinkles in the treatment area. If you're wondering which would be best suited to what your individual needs are, Philadelphia plastic surgeon, Dr. Ran Stark, can help you decide what's right for you.

Dermal Filler
Benefits

Dermal fillers are one of our most popular services at StarkMD Plastic Surgery. They have a wide range of applications, allowing nearly anyone to look younger and more appealing.

Fillers are an attractive option since the risk of serious side effects is considerably lower than plastic surgery. There is no downtime, aftercare, anesthesia fees, or surgical scars. Instead, you can rejuvenate your appearance and highlight your best features in a minimally invasive procedure. Fillers go to work quickly, so you will not have to wait months to see your final results. Those results last months to years, depending on the product making dermal fillers one of the best values in cosmetic surgery.

With Philadelphia dermal fillers at StarkMD Plastic Surgery, patients can:

  • Enhance thin lips
  • Lift the cheekbones
  • Accentuate a small chin
  • Treat ice-pick scars and boxcar scars
  • Achieve a more contoured face shape
  • Enjoy smoother, younger-looking hands
  • Improve hollow under eyes and dark circles
  • Look more attractive, fresh, and rejuvenated
  • Reduce smoker’s lines, marionette lines, and nasolabial folds around the mouth

Who is a candidate for Dermal Fillers?

If you are interested in eliminating wrinkles or distensible acne scars, or if you want to add volume to your face, hands, or body, dermal fillers may be an option. It is incredible what fillers can do to make you look younger and highlight your best features. There are only a few instances when fillers are not appropriate. Smokers, pregnant or nursing women, and individuals with certain medical conditions may not be able to receive fillers. The FDA does not recommend fillers for patients under the age of 18.

  • Aging hands

Restylane®

The Restylane line of fillers is another highly effective and popular hyaluronic acid dermal filler. Restylane treatments can smooth moderate to severe facial lines and folds, subtly enhance lips and cheeks, and replace lost volume on the back of the hands. Fillers include Restylane Lyft®, Restylane, Restylane-L®, Restylane Defyne® and Restylane Refyne®.

Sculptra®

Sculptra Aesthetic is a poly-l-lactic acid dermal filler. Sculptra injections stimulate your skin's production of collagen to replace facial volume lost to aging. Sculptra treatment spans about three months and takes place over the course of up to four injection sessions. Currently, Sculptra is used for full face rejuvenation as well as non-facial areas. These areas can include improvement in the arms, hands, décolletage (the chest area), and buttocks.

Radiesse®

Radiesse can treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds on the face, including nasolabial folds, and correct volume loss on the hands. Radiesse can both create lift and definition in the treatment areas and stimulate your body's natural collagen production. Radiesse is also being used for non-facial areas such as the arms, hands, décolletage and buttocks.

Bellafill®

Bellafill is a particularly long-lasting dermal filler, and is FDA approved to treat smile lines for up to five years. In addition, Bellafill is the only dermal filler FDA approved for the treatment of distensible acne scars for up to one year.

Belotero

Belotero is an FDA-approved dermal injectable containing hyaluronic acid in a soft cohesive gel. This solution integrates into the facial tissues to smooth the skin. Hyaluronic acid (HA) binds with water in the body to hydrate and plump the skin, creating a natural, soft appearance.

Belotero injections not only restore lost facial volume, they also smooth etched-in wrinkles and lines by adding volume below the skin surface. Results of Belotero injections last for six months or longer depending upon the quantity injected. Because every patient is different, the number of injections needed will vary. The smoothing effect is immediate, and there is no downtime - just beautiful, smooth results.

The Dermal Filler Injection
Process

If you are a candidate for dermal fillers, you are welcome to receive your injections on the same day. Our injector will first cleanse the area. They may apply ice or numbing cream, especially for sensitive areas around the mouth. Rather than pain, you are more likely to feel a quick pinch or pressure as they inject the filler. Some fillers contain a small amount of lidocaine to ease injection site pain. The process generally only takes a few minutes.

Dermal Filler Results

The beauty of dermal fillers is that they take effect immediately to plump and smooth the skin. The exception is Sculptra, which requires up to four treatments over three months.

The full results are generally visible within one to two weeks once any swelling or bruising subside.

Fillers last a long time, but the results are not permanent. You will need to return after six months to two years when you notice the effects wearing off, depending on the product and how fast your body metabolizes the filler ingredients.

Dermal Filler FAQs

Are dermal fillers safe?

Our dermal fillers have a high safety profile and have passed clinical trials. Most side effects are cosmetic, and fillers are unlikely to result in emergent medical issues when properly injected. Seeing an experienced injector is the best way to reduce your risk of adverse reactions.

Do dermal fillers hurt during injection?

Mild discomfort is expected. However, most patients find the injections are easily tolerated. Ice or numbing cream makes the process more comfortable. Some fillers also contain lidocaine, which has a numbing effect.

How much do dermal fillers cost?

The cost of dermal fillers in Philadelphia depends on how many vials or units you need to achieve your desired result. Our staff will provide a full breakdown of costs during your consultation. Special promotions and financing may be available on select services and products at StarkMD.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is one of the most popular dermal filler ingredients. It is bound in BDDE, an ingredient that cross-links the HA molecules to control the filler’s texture. HA is a natural polysaccharide found throughout your skin and soft tissues. The HA in fillers is lab-made. Because it closely matches the HA your body produces, there is a low risk of allergy from HA fillers.

What age can you start getting dermal filler?

Eighteen is the minimum age for dermal fillers, although most patients start considering fillers when age-related changes appear in their 20s and 30s.
